The month of October has already been a busy one. The Santa Ana History Room has been present at the National History Day at NARA. It was a fantastic event, and it is always exciting to see high school youth excited about history. As always our collection on Mendez v. Westminister was a talking point but some of our other collections were highlighted as well. Recently, we were apart of the 11th Annual Cemetery Tour by the Santa Ana Historical Preservation Society, as usual it was a great success and they sold out every tour. For now we are weathering the budget crisis and these tough economic times with everyone else. I am hopeful and I look forward to seeing a large turnout for this year's election on Nov. 4th. I will try and stay on top of posting events and happening as they come along.
Your faithful filer,

Archives Month in California
It's Archives Month in California! And, whadda you know...October is designated as National Archives Month, too.
First, on the national level: if you've never visited the Society of American Archivist's website, I'd encourage you to do it this month. On the page dedicated specifically to this event http://www.archivists.org/archivesmonth/index.asp you'll find all kinds of materials, including handouts for patrons, event planners, press releases, AND a public relations tool kit that practically does all the work for you. http://www.archivists.org/archivesmonth/AAM2008/2008_AAM_Kit.pdf
With regard to California, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has proclaimed October 2008 as "Archives Month" in California. In the proclamation, the Governor recognized more than 4,000 archival institutions in California and their role in preserving the state's history. He writes, "These valuable facilities hold the stories of our Golden State and provide us with access to permanent governmental records. These archives also help Californians to trace their ancestry or see history come alive through photographs of times past."
By his proclamation, Governor Schwarzenegger also recognizes the contributions of archivists to preservation of California's history. He writes, "These archives are made available to us thanks to the dedicated men and women who work hard to collect and preserve our records. I extend thanks to these archivists who help safeguard our fantastic history. Their hard work is appreciated now and will be treasured into the future."
Governor Schwarzenegger encourages Californians "to take advantage of our state's archival institutions that provide insight into our state's remarkable heritage."
This year's theme is Going Green: California's Conservation Movement.
